Anyone selling or marketing on the internet knows that search engine optimization (SEO) is a vast topic and an ever-changing animal. There are articles, websites and books all devoted to the subject.
Many SEO strategists promise the moon. The top promise is “your site will be in the top ten ranking or the number one position in the search engines”. Note: which search engine is not specified. So you may well end up as the top ranked site on some remote search engine that no one, but no one, has ever heard of. Not a whole lot of value for you and usually for a fair amount of cash. In reality, there are lots of factors that can influence your site’s position in search results. Plus, that position can change daily. You may be number 3 one week, and fall to the second page the next.
Many SEO companies have learned to so-called ‘game the system.’ Sort of finding a back-end way to get high placement (for a day or two). It’s a way to “spam” the search engines; to fool them into including a site in the top ten, even if that site has no useful, relevant content
Once the major search engines discover they’ve been ‘gamed’, you will forever find yourself on the 10th page of results. The world of SEO is a constantly changing animal as search engines adjust and change their algorithms. Each time Google changes it’s SEO algorithm, it’s a whole new game. Interestingly enough, they always name their algorithms after animals – hmmmm.
So why? Simple – Search Engine companies are trying to preserve the internet. What do they want? Good Content. That’s it – Good Content. Make your content valuable and SEO friendly and your ranking will reflect it. Yes, there are also SEO strategies, but the days of add a few keywords and presto you climb in the rankings is over.
What do you need to keep in mind for a SEO friendly site?
- Good Content – write for the audience, not the search engine
- Update your content regularily. A blog helps
- Research your keywords! Use Niche Keywords – narrow the field
- Use alt text on images. Search engines read text, not images
- Expand and Optimize your links
- Structure your site for SEO
- Monitor your pages
